BABA LY

Mahmoud Baba Ly, whose artist name is “Baba Ly”, was born in Thiès in Senegal in 1987. He grew up in a family of artists with a renowned painter and calligrapher father Amadou Dédé Ly and a seamstress mother. It was in his father's workshop, located in the Village des Arts in Dakar, that he was introduced to the visual arts from a very young age. Trained by his father, he quickly found his own way. He began painting at the age of 14, following his own path and guided by the unique emotions of nature and his environment. His style is “neither figurative”, “nor abstract”, it is “subjective and engaged”.

“My experience,” he confides, “is my main source of inspiration. Everything that happens around me and can happen at any time of the day inspires me. This is what allows me to have an inexhaustible source of inspiration…”

At the age of 17, he was noticed and sought after by several galleries in Senegal and internationally. This is the start of a long series of exhibitions in several cities in Senegal, France, Monaco, the United States, Mauritania, Istanbul, Morocco...

He also counts among his many collectors the King of Morocco Mohammed VI.
