A WORLD OF FRATERNITY
In the works of Momar Seck, “the notions of social unity, the bonding of human communities, the overcoming of material conditions and the reorientation of visions of the world recur like leitmotifs. Color, even if Dr Momar Seck does not theorize it, opens up new spatial organizations thanks to the tropical sun of Senegal. What is thrown away as waste, or even rejected, transforms our outlook. From an object of everyday consumption, and even in the most total poverty, Dr Momar Seck offers another world, relegating impulse consumerism and the poverty of the initial materials to the back. » Jean-Gilles BOULA
In her pictorial practice, Momar combines textiles bearing African signs and symbols with accessories and materials found in Switzerland (paintings, pastels, etc.) as a method of marriage between the two poles of her life, Africa and Europe. His artistic concerns go hand in hand with his convictions and his social vision. Thus the recovery of textiles, which has its own history depending on the society from which it comes, makes it possible to establish a dialogue between peoples and cultures. The pieces of fabric stuck to each other express the desire for self-change and exchanges with others, the desire for union and cohesion.
His work reflects a rootedness in the essential values of Africa. In front of these heterogeneous objects, Momar Seck sees it as a moment of escape where we are transported into a world of fraternity. Order and disorder, rigor and spontaneity, dream and reality, places his works in a permanent evolution.
MOMAR SECK
Visual artist, painter and sculptor, Momar Seck is a citizen of the world and a transmitter of knowledge.
Graduated from the National School of Arts in Dakar (major of his class) in 1994, he received a scholarship from the Swiss Federal Commission of Culture for a third cycle of advanced training at the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-arts in Geneva . He holds a doctorate in Visual Arts from the University of Strasbourg in 2012. Through his creations, the artist Momar is the winner of a number of distinctions including the UNESCO Prize for the promotion of visual arts.
Originally from Senegal and Switzerland, Momar Seck taught for around thirty years in Switzerland, including 10 years as head of the Arts and Design department at the International School of Geneva.
After this long stay in Europe, he decided to return to Senegal in 2022 to contribute to the cultural development of his country. He explains his artistic approach in his book “Contemporary African Art, my shared approach” (Baobab Edition).
Concerned about sharing, it organizes residencies for Swiss and French artists in Senegal and offers training and fruitful exchange opportunities to young Senegalese artists and young Swiss and international students.
His work reflects a rootedness in the essential values of Africa. He attempts to raise awareness by working on the themes of the environment, interculturality, identity and permanent existential questions. His thinking mainly focuses on the use of recycled materials and objects. Thus the recovery of textiles, which has its own history depending on the society from which it comes, makes it possible to establish a dialogue between peoples and cultures.
The pieces of fabric stuck to each other express the desire for self-change and exchanges with others, the desire for union and cohesion.
Momar exhibits regularly in Europe and Senegal, he has participated in exhibitions in France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Switzerland (Palais des Nations, Rath Museum in Geneva, Kunsthalle in Bern), in the United States, in Cuba …and so many others.
In May 2022 he will participate in the Dakar Biennial of Contemporary African Art at the Senegal Pavilion at the Museum of Black Civilizations. Currently his exhibition “Environment 2.0” is on view at the Ngala contemporary art space in Zurich until March 15, 2023.
